Fraction P6 A001

Dan and Mark received some money from their father. Mark would have $128 more than Dan if Dan gave 2/5 of his share to Mark. Mark would have $288 more than Dan if Dan gave 2/3 of his share to Mark. How much money did Dan receive from his father?

2/5 of his share. 2/3 of his share.
Firstly make them into like fractions, i.e. denominators the same by multiplying 2/5 by 3/3 and 2/3 by 5/5, so that all units are of the same size.
2/5 x 3/3 = 6/15
2/3 x 5/5 = 10/15

Then draw the models as follows:
D              [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] ?
M              [][][][][][][][][][ 128 ]

D              [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][]
M              [][][][][][           288             ]  ) Compare these
                             [][][][][ 128][][][][]      ) 288 -- > 8 u + 128

8 u -- > 288 – 128 = 160
1 u -- > 160 ÷ 8 = 20

15 u -- > 15 x 20 = $300

Dan received $300 from his father.
