Fraction P6 2010 SA2 Henry Park P6 Q16

There were some fruits in a warehouse. 3/7 of them were apples and the rest were oranges. After throwing away 27 apples and ¼ of the oranges that were rotten, there were 3/5 of the fruits left. (a) How many fruits were thrown away? (b) How many apples were there at first? [5 marks][42, 45]

3    :    4   = 15  :  20

3/5 x 35 = 21

3/4 x 20 = 15

21 - 15 = 6

A            O
--------------
15 u      20 u
- 27      - 5 u
---------------
6 u        15 u
---------------

9 u --> 27
1 u --> 27/9 = 3

5 u --> 5 x 3 = 15

15 + 27 = 42 fruits

a) 42 fruits were thrown away.

15 u --> 15 x 3 = 45 apples

b) It was 45 apples.
